People often remove the interior fan ducts to make it easier to work on the engine — but with those holes left open, a lot of the engine fan's airflow escapes instead of cooling the cylinders. I've seen idling head temperatures of 380F and a rough idle without the caps. With the caps, idle head temperatures are 280-320F and the idle is smooth.
